This could be creating a low maintenance garden or rejuvenating a garden with a top dressing of soil.

The use of placing weed suppression in a garden can really act character to the garden by the choice of what surface dressing is used.

Taking old styled terraced houses with small garden areas, and using stone this being slate in this example can really open up a garden.

When the area is very small, sometimes a small amount of features such as small paving slabs in this case below, is enough to change the front of the house to looking crisp, tidy and clean.

For a gentler and organic look, bark provides a good weed suppression cover, it can be used for large areas as the picture below, or it can be used around plants such as shrubs and bushes when planting or as an ongoing mulching and weed suppression around the plants.

If you are not looking to create a low maintenance area, but just require the weeds cut down for you to start again, the top dressing would be a really good option. This is done by cutting the overgrown grass and weeds, apply weed killer to the area three times over a period of 6 weeks, and then top dress the area with top soil. This would allow you to start your garden again from scratch.
